And if you notice, he looks young the first couple times he changes into Hyde, but as the film goes on they make him look older and more grizzled, as well as subtly implying Hyde grows taller by the end, to convey that Hyde starts out as a small part of Jekyll's buried psyche but grows more powerful and controlling with time.

The Hyde makeup in the 1941 version just looks like a guy with circles under his eyes and isn't particularly frightening at all.Justin Enuffa Ballardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06265684856641084693noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3575280877085021446.post-36406802564471048332021-08-20T16:39:50.610+02:002021-08-20T16:39:50.610+02:00I am seeing this blog many many years after this p...I am seeing this blog many many years after this post was made, but I need to thank you for the shots from the transformation. But really, as far as the horror and quality of the films go, 1932 easily trumps 1941. And Mamoulian > Victor Fleming in every way.

That lingering moment when Miriam Hopkins' leg shifts back and forth like a pendulum has to be one of the most erotic in film history.Andreashttp://mendthiscrack.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3575280877085021446.post-10595055063179850642010-07-13T15:21:53.831+02:002010-07-13T15:21:53.831+02:00Coniam:

I love comment discussions.
I agree with you that March's Hyde becomes more frightening as the film progresses - such an intimidating asshole! He reminds me of how some men becomes violent and gets freaky adrenaline rushes when drunk... Help. However I thought that Tracy managed to make Hyde more sexually intimidating, more like a mad rapist and serial killer. In short, they're both great actors, although March is far sexier.

Millie:
I just love you, sweet sixteen! Your comments are so encouraging.
You should see both films, Bergman is really good as Ivy. And since the female characters were invented in the 1880's, I think it's okay ;)

Rena:
I'm glad you like it! I'll take a glance at your blog!

Mr Pendlebury:
I'm not saying I wouldn't spontaneously strip for Mr. Tracy... Rather that I without a doubt would do it for Mr. March!
I'd love to hear your opinions!

Matthew Coniam:
Oh, you lovely man! Some movies require a lot of screencaps, right?
I like the 1941 version too, although my fiancé told me that it was pretty obvious which one was my favorite... I'm not good at being impartial! However, I feel that Lana's part destroys a lot - it's just too uninteresting.
Meh... "Kind of" Victorian is enough for me! Can't do research for every blog post... The only thing the Tracy version has that the other doesn't is the fab fantasy scene with Ingrid and Lana as shiny nude horses.
I also like March's make-up, though I didn't at first. I think it's especially clever the way he gets uglier, older and more degenerate-looking each time he transforms.

If I was a pedant I'd add that Frankenstein is actually pre-Victorian...

I think I have the same disc as you. I found the 1941 version pretty boring overall although I actually thought Ingrid Bergman was one bright spot in the movie.

But I have to disagree with you about the makeup. Spencer Tracy might have looked more realistic but he didn't really scare me at all. Whereas yes March's makeup looks silly and in fact at the start his Hyde is a bit over the top. But as the film goes on he becomes more terrifying, he's no longer something to laugh at. That scene when he appears in front of Miriam Hopkins in the mirror when she thinks he is gone for good is brilliant. It's the same scene in the 1941 version but it didn't make me jump at all.

I also love the scene when he changed after seeing the bird get eaten by the cat.Kimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01798552679871435314noreply@blogger.com
