After seeing this, I immediately went and showed it to my younger brothers (that's the kind of older sister I am! haha) and then today I showed it to my Mum.

We all laughed hysterically. My mother even stated that she wished there were actual books like this that she could have read to us all when we were very young.

Strangely enough, this was one of the very first things I ever watched on YouTube.

I remember being bothered by this book as a child because of the dungeon-like appearance of the jail cell into which George is thrown after ringing the fire alarm--I know this was written in 1941, but even THEN people had heard of Penal Reform...seriously, this picture reminded me of Arthur Rackham's illustration for "Oliver Twist" showing Fagin biting his nails in Newgate the night before he is hanged.

But I'll say it again here--I'd LOVE to see a Curious George movie with Klaus Kinski as the Man With the Yellow Hat--That would be sublime!

I contacted Hugh Munroe Neely at the Mary Picford Foundation to contact Robert Tonner about making a doll in her likeness; I don't believe he did and I don't know that Tonner would have been interested. Hmmm...I've never heard that one before, and I've been interested in Bergman since the mid-1970s, when I suddenly discovered that he WAS NOT the same person who was in CASABLANCA...

I don't suppose any of his movies have "mother" or legitimacy issues in them? Certainly not the ones I've seen.

And I'm more or less committed to going to see POTC4--promised the daughter, and you should know how daughters react when something is promised an not delivered. From what you've mentioned, I'll just have to grit my teeth and wait for the Mermaids to show up (but I won't be paying an extra $3 to see it in 3-D, however.)

I'm not certain that simply expressing an opinion, no matter how stupid or how badly delivered in a second language, is a fair excuse for someone to be kicked out of anywhere--certainly not someplace that calls itself a "Free" country which, the last I heard, France still was.

But perhaps Cannes is a place like some of our restaurants, with a little sign that says "We Reserve the Right to Refuse Service to Anybody." They need to be careful, or perhaps the Film Festival will have to be relocated to someplace more congenial, like Norrkoping, or maybe Fucking, Austria (and what a great name that would be for a film festival!)

I don't get it! Why is everyone so upset with this? I think it's rather refreshing that von Trier steps out of the political correctness that totally rules our time. Many of the top nazis, including Hitler were in fact very interesting if also often very frightning characters, and they were not 100% wrong all the time, every day of the week. Had von Trier prepared a little more for this it would have come across better. Random half positive mumblings about the nazis simply doesn't work, especially not in France which was deeply affected by nazi mayhem back in the day.

I'm calling him Lars von Troll from now on. I've reached the point with him where he's shown himself so utterly bereft of, well, anything that I'm starting to question those works of his I actually *did* like and wonder was there anything actually to them.

And of these the only one I have in my whole DVD library is Love and Death (one of my favorite films.) I keep waiting for his movies to show up in the bargain bins, but they never do.

Not a lot of Allen's more recent (as in last 25 years) stuff gets much play around here--I remember a friend of mine asking the proprietor of the (now defunct) local 'bargain' theater if they were going to show one of his mid-80s films, only to be told that "Woody Allen is the Kiss of Death in this town." Why am I not surprised? Branagh's Henry V didn't play here--neither did his Hamlet (but Mel Gibson's Hamlet DID. Morons.)

Hahaha--maybe he wasn't fully aware of what he was saying, perhaps goes to show the dangers of trying to speak English when you're not 100% comfortable with it. What happens now, if the film is nominated for Best Picture, or Best Foreign Film next year? I can just hear the crowd's reaction. How well I remember the hostility provoked by Vanessa Redgrave's "Zionist Hooligans" remark when she accepted her statuette many years ago. But how interesting would these film events be without someone to put their foot in their mouth, and even more impressive feet when you have your head up your ass already?

Thank you Lolita! Excellent pieces about Lon Chaney, who is one of my favourite actors. I have the films of his that are availbale on DVD and reading your articles about them was fantastic! He Who Gets Slapped is my favourite Chaney film but I like them all!
